Penn & Drexel Move-Out
Junk Removal, University City
Move-out here runs on a calendar, and the trucks book out fast on both dates: the on-campus rush around mid-May commencement and the bigger off-campus wave in late August, when leases run to the 31st. Book your window ahead, send a photo of the room or the curb, and we clear the mattresses, couches and mini-fridges by the truckload — flat from $241, or $111 for a single mattress. Split across roommates, no PA sales tax on the service.
Booking a move-out clear, step by step
1 · Photograph the pile
Stand in the doorway and send a couple of wide shots of the room, the hallway heap, or the curb stack. One roommate can do it for the whole house — you don't have to be moved out first.
2 · Lock a window
You get a flat price back in seconds and pick a time. On the May and August dates, reserve a day or two ahead so a slot is held for you rather than gambling on a walk-up.
3 · We clear it out
A vetted, insured crew comes to the dorm floor or the third story of the twin, carries every mattress, couch and fridge down, bags the mattresses, and donates or recycles what it can. You hand back clean keys.
How much does a University City move-out cost?
Everything is priced flat and photo-quoted before the truck rolls. Single items have set prices; a whole apartment or shared house is scoped by how much of the truck it fills and splits cleanly across the lease. For a benchmark, Homeyou pegs the average Philadelphia junk-removal job around $231–$242 — a single-item figure; a five-roommate house is a truck-fill job, and the ladder below is the real number. Labor, the carry-down, the drive and disposal are all inside it.
| Item / Job | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Twin mattress | $82 |
| Box spring | $92 |
| Queen mattress | $103 |
| Sofa / couch | $126 |
| Futon | $111 |
| Mini-fridge | $115 |
| Desk | $83 |
| Dresser | $126 |
| Dorm / studio clear (quarter truck) | $241 |
| Shared apartment (half truck) | $431 |
| Whole house (full truck) | $732 |
$75 minimum. Dorm elevators, third-floor twin stairs and porch carries are all included — no stairs surcharge. Clearing a whole house? Send photos of every room and we price the lot as one truck-fill you split however you like. No PA sales tax on the service.
Why the group price beats a U-Haul
Here's the part that saves student houses the most money: we don't charge per person or per item once you cross into truck-fill territory — we charge for the truck. A four- or five-bedroom Powelton twin that's a wall of futons, mattresses, mini-fridges and IKEA desks clears as one half or full truck-fill, then divides across the house. Against a one-way U-Haul rental plus fuel plus the four of you carrying everything down three flights and finding somewhere legal to dump it, the split flat price usually wins on both money and a wrecked moving day. One person sends the photos, everyone Venmos their share, and nobody spends the last afternoon of the lease wrestling a box spring down a winder stair.
What comes out of a student move-out
- Mattresses & box springs — twin through queen; we bring the plastic bag the city requires and recycle them.
- Couches, futons & cheap furniture — the hand-me-down sofa, the loveseat, the futon frame, the desks and dressers that aren't worth the drive home.
- Mini-fridges & small appliances — the dorm fridge, a microwave, a fan, a busted lamp; usable fridges get donated.
- Bags of leftover stuff — clothes, textbooks, kitchen odds and ends, the accumulation of a lease nobody wants to pack.
- Whole shared houses — every room at once, priced as one truck-fill and split across the roommates.
Can't we just put it at the curb?
Not on move-out week's terms, and that's what trips students up every year. The city's two-item curbside bulk limit allows two large items on your regular trash day — but a move-out is a whole apartment at once, on a hard lease date, not two items rationed across weeks you no longer live in the unit. The city also requires every curbside mattress to be sealed in a plastic mattress bag (skip it and it's a violation), and a mini-fridge needs a separate appliance appointment through Philly 311 (dial 3-1-1, or 215-686-8686) scheduled days out. Set a whole apartment's worth of stuff on the sidewalk after handing back the keys and it becomes the landlord's citation and, often, a chunk of somebody's security deposit.
Our lane is exactly what that program isn't: everything at once, on your date, inside the unit. We carry it down from the dorm floor or the third story, bag the mattresses ourselves, and it's gone the same trip — one flat price you approved from a photo, split however works for the house.
The two dates to plan around
- Mid-May commencement (on-campus) — dorms and student towers empty over graduation week: mattresses, mini-fridges and dorm furniture in volume, on a tight window. Reserve early. (Confirm your building's exact 2026 move-out date.)
- Late-August lease turn (off-campus) — the bigger wave, as leases run to August 31 and the Victorian twins, high-rises and Powelton/Mantua rows all turn over at once. This is the crush; a booked window beats a walk-up every time.
- Between-tenant landlord resets — units cleared and reset for the next lease any time of year, flat-priced by the truckload.
Why University City books JunkRabbit for move-out
- Flat price from a photo — the number you approve is the number you pay; no in-home estimate, no PA sales tax.
- Group pricing — one truck-fill for the whole house, split across roommates instead of per person.
- We bag the mattress & carry it down — dorm elevators, third-floor twins and porch houses handled, no stairs surcharge.
- Book your move-week window ahead, with donation and recycling included.
What University City students & parents say
"Five of us in a Powelton twin, lease up August 31, and every room a pile of mattresses and mini-fridges. Booked a week ahead, one flat price for the whole house split five ways — worked out to less than the U-Haul quote. Showed up on the dot."
"Flew in for graduation and had one afternoon to empty my son's Drexel apartment. They took the mattress, futon and fridge in a single trip, bagged the mattress themselves, and there was no sales tax on the bill. Painless."
"Cleared out of a high-rise dorm on move-out day — they met me at the unit, handled the elevator and loading window, and I didn't drag a thing to a curb. Photo quote, flat price, done in twenty minutes."
Move-out questions, answered
How much does a move-out clear cost in University City?
Flat and photo-quoted: twin mattress $82, box spring $92, couch $126, mini-fridge $115, desk $83. A whole apartment or house is truck-fill priced — quarter $241, half $431, three-quarter $587, full $732 — and splits across roommates. $75 minimum, disposal included, no PA sales tax.
When should we book for May and August?
As early as you have a date. The mid-May commencement rush and the late-August lease turn are the busiest weeks here and same-day fills up. Reserve a window a week or two ahead; off-peak, same-day is usually open.
Is there a group price for a shared house?
Yes — one truck-fill for the whole place, split across roommates rather than per person. Send photos of every room and we quote the entire job flat.
Do I have to bag the mattress?
No. The city requires a plastic mattress bag for curbside — we bring it, bag the mattress, and recycle it for you.
Can you come to a dorm or high-rise?
Yes — elevators, loading windows and hallway carries handled. We come to the unit; you drag nothing to the curb.
