The Department of Sanitation does collect bulky items for free, with limits. If your job fits them, use the city. Here’s where the lines are.

Up to two large non-metal items per household on your regular collection day. Mattresses count — but only if they’re wrapped in plastic.
Bulk Appointments
Up to four items per appointment, including emptied refrigerators with the doors removed, appliances and furniture. Only single-family homes and buildings of up to six units qualify, and slots go first-come, first-served.
